Midterm Election Day Results - 1 Corinthians 1:3

Today Paul's benediction seems a good prayer for our country and our world.
May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you his grace and peace. 1 Cor 1:3 (NLT)

On the radio I heard of one soldier in Iraq who reportedly said, "I got up this morning and put on the uniform of a whole new country."  Whether you are happy or sad today, I believe Christians trust in government for their hopes and dreams more than we should. I know it's easy to say having never been under an intolerant government, but then we may be seeing that road ahead.  Our trust is supposed to be in God. It was under an intolerant government that Christianity flourished and under sanctimonious rule that it floundered succumbing to a pretense of piety.

Our money declares, "In God we Trust." Really? Then whether you won or lost at the polls what has changed? Did you trust God yesterday? Does your life declare trust today? Look even at the words we use, "won" or "lost." Vote your heart, your hope, and trust in God today, tomorrow and the next day.

I love the writer of Hebrews' counsel. It seems to fit today.  Remember your leaders who first taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and trust the Lord as they do. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb 13:7-8 NLT) .

Today whether we rejoiced or lamented as we watched the exit polls, whether as a country we are truly looking up or looking to ourselves, God give us grace. Give us the undeserved favor that has given us the opportunities and the privileges we enjoy today. Give us the grace needed to deliver us from the false hopes and pretenses of piety we so quickly display and to which we so easily fall victim.

Whether we are stressed or relieved by election results, may we experience the peace, the kind of peace that only comes from trusting your grace. Whether we trust you or deny you as individuals, whether by intent or accident, use our people, use our leaders as instruments of your grace and peace in the world. As the Apostle Paul reflects; Who is Apollos, and who is Paul, that we should be the cause of such quarrels? Why, we're only servants. Through us God caused you to believe. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us (1 Cor 3:5 NLT).

Oh God make it so and let us truly be your servants today.

Can you hear the trap of the law, the trap of performance and pride, the forbidding of flawed authenticity that pushes the Teds of the world into back alleys of sin with their secret struggles? Then the trap is sprung and we are shocked! Appalled!
Too late we open the sprung trap and find an authentic, now confessional sinner inside; "The fact is I am guilty of sexual immorality. And I take responsibility for the entire problem,"  Read the whole Devo
